If you’re applying for a California contractor license and CSLB requires you to take an examination, you’ll eventually be referred to PSI, the company that currently administers California contractor licensing exams.
But there’s an important distinction:
CSLB creates and maintains the contractor examinations. PSI administers them.
You don’t simply go to PSI, pick a contractor exam, and register whenever you’re ready. Your Contractors State License Board application must first be reviewed, accepted, and referred for testing.

If you do not pass within the 18-month eligibility period, your application is generally considered void and you’ll need to submit a new application and new fees.
Don’t wait until the final weeks of your eligibility period to begin serious exam preparation.
Leave yourself enough time for a retake if necessary.
If you fail an examination, you are eligible to retake it after:
21 calendar days
You then pay the applicable re-examination fee directly to PSI and schedule another attempt.
The retest must still occur within your application’s 18-month examination eligibility period.

If you pass one required exam and fail the other, you generally do not need to immediately retake the exam you already passed.

Passing your exams also does not mean your contractor license instantly becomes active.
