A C-4 license allows you to legally contract for work within the C-4 classification when a contractor license is required.
It can also help you pursue specialized residential, commercial, industrial, institutional, and mechanical-system projects involving boilers and hydronic or steam-heating equipment.
To qualify for the C-4 examination, you generally need at least four years of qualifying experience in the C-4 classification within the previous 10 years.
The experience does not have to consist exclusively of journey-level employment.

Passing the required examinations is not the final step. CSLB will send instructions identifying the remaining requirements needed before the license can be issued.

California contractors must maintain a $25,000 contractor license bond.
The contractor license bond is not a performance bond or project-completion guarantee. It is filed for the benefit of consumers who may be damaged by defective construction or other license-law violations and employees who have not been paid wages due to them.
A separate $25,000 Bond of Qualifying Individual may also be required depending on how the license is qualified.
C-4 contractors with employees generally must maintain workers’ compensation insurance.
