A properly completed CSLB Certification of Work Experience form is an important part of your contractor license application. The goal is to clearly describe the actual trade duties you perform and show that your experience fits the classification you are applying for.
One of the things that seems to be most confusing to applicants is what should actually be included in the experience description. You want to steer clear of including administrative work, individual project names, or unnecessary project details. The CSLB wants to see the specific trade duties you perform on the jobsite.
What trades are you performing? If you are applying for the C-10 Electrical license, are you pulling wire, installing 120/240V electrical systems, installing panels, or running conduit? If you’re applying for a C-53 Pool license, are you installing rebar, applying gunite, installing electrical systems such as lighting and pool controls, or performing plumbing work? If you are applying for the C-33 Painting license, are you prepping painting surfaces, repairing drywall, mixing paint, or applying latex or water-based paints or stains?
The CSLB experience form should focus on your trade experience rather than what you do on the business or administrative side of things. For example, pulling permits, signing contracts, dealing with clients, managing projects, and providing estimates do not describe the hands-on trade duties CSLB is looking for on the Certification of Work Experience form.
Your experience description should also be accurate and consistent with the work you actually performed. CSLB may contact your certifier or request supporting documentation to verify the experience listed on your application, so your outline should be as detailed and accurate as possible.
