If you’re preparing for a California contractor license examination, understanding the PSI testing process is just as important as knowing what to study.
The Contractors State License Board (CSLB) creates and maintains California’s contractor licensing examinations, while PSI currently administers the exams at computer-based testing centers.
Good PSI test preparation therefore involves two things:

Here’s what you need to know before test day.
CSLB and PSI have different roles.

The C-61 Limited Specialty classification does not require a Trade Examination.

The Law and Business Examination focuses on the business and legal responsibilities of operating a California contracting business.

Experienced tradespeople sometimes underestimate this exam because much of the content doesn’t involve physically performing their trade.
Treat Law and Business as its own study subject.
Trade exam content depends on the contractor classification.

Do not assume that a generic construction practice exam will adequately prepare you for your Trade test.

Each required examination has its own fee.
If you’re taking both Law and Business and Trade, you can schedule them for the same day or different days depending on availability and your preference.
PSI testing locations and appointment availability can change.
Rather than maintaining a static list of test centers in a blog article, use the current PSI scheduling portal to see which locations are available when you’re ready to test.

Trade examinations must be taken at authorized PSI locations in:
Law and Business has broader availability and can also be administered at approved PSI testing centers elsewhere in the United States.
Your PSI account will show the locations available for your particular examination.
CSLB currently provides:
3½ hours for each examination
That means Law and Business has its own 3½-hour testing period, and your Trade examination has a separate 3½-hour period when both are required.
Use timed practice sessions during your preparation so you become comfortable working steadily without rushing.
Once CSLB accepts your application, you generally have:
18 months
to pass all examinations required under that application.
If you do not pass within the 18-month eligibility period, the application generally becomes void and you must submit a new application and new fees.
If you pass one required examination but not the other, the passing examination result is generally valid for five years, but you still need to complete the current application requirements within its eligibility period to avoid the application becoming void.
Do not rely on older instructions saying you can make penalty-free changes up to 24 hours before the exam.
CSLB’s current rule is:
PSI must receive your cancellation or rescheduling request two days before the scheduled examination date if you want to avoid forfeiting the examination fee.
For example, for a 9:00 AM Monday appointment, PSI must receive the cancellation before 9:00 AM the previous Saturday.
You can cancel or reschedule through:
A voicemail or email to CSLB or PSI does not count as an acceptable cancellation.
If you:
you can forfeit the examination fee.
If you do not pass an examination, you must wait:
21 calendar days
before you are eligible to retake that examination.
You then pay and reschedule directly through PSI.
Remember that the 21-day waiting period still has to fit within your overall 18-month application eligibility period.
If you take an exam within three weeks of your application’s void date and fail, that may be your final opportunity under that application.
If you need a testing accommodation because of a qualifying disability or medical condition, request approval through CSLB before scheduling the examination.
CSLB reviews the accommodation request.

Do not use the standard PSI scheduling process after an accommodation has been approved unless CSLB/PSI instructs you to do so.
CSLB also provides a process for approved translators when an appropriate translated examination is not available.
CSLB currently offers Spanish versions of 10 commonly taken exams:
If your requested exam is available in Spanish and Spanish is your requested language, CSLB requires you to take the Spanish version rather than use a translator.
For other languages or applicable Trade exams, you may request an approved translator.
The translator must be approved by CSLB in advance.

Do not schedule an ordinary appointment first and assume you can bring a translator with you.
California contractor licensing examinations are:
Review your PSI confirmation before test day for the exact:
Avoid relying on unsupported claims about every PSI location having identical lockers, biometric scanners, AI proctoring systems, ergonomic equipment, or other features.
Test-center procedures can change and may vary by location.
Follow the current instructions supplied by PSI for your appointment.
You must bring acceptable, valid government-issued identification.
The name on your ID needs to correspond to your examination record.
If you do not present acceptable identification, you can be denied admission and forfeit the examination fee.
Check the current PSI/CSLB instructions before your appointment rather than relying on an old list of acceptable documents.
California CSLB licensing examinations are generally closed book.
Do not bring:
into the examination expecting to use them.
The reference materials listed in CSLB study guides are intended to help you prepare before the exam.
Content knowledge matters most, but exam strategy can help you use that knowledge effectively.
Pay attention to words such as:
Don’t stop when you see the first answer that sounds plausible.
CSLB questions are multiple choice, and your job is to select the best response.
CSLB’s examination study guides state there is no penalty for guessing.
If you’re unsure:
You have 3½ hours, but don’t spend an excessive amount of time on one difficult question.
Timed practice can help you develop a steady pace before test day.
You receive your examination result before you leave the PSI testing center.
Your report tells you that you passed.
Successful candidates are not given a detailed numerical score.
Passing the required exams does not mean your contractor license is immediately active.
