The Ultimate Guide to CSLB Exam Scheduling and PSI Contact Info

What You Need to Know About Scheduling Your CSLB Exam

CSLB exam dates aren’t published in advance like traditional test schedules. Instead, you schedule your exam appointment directly with PSI after your application is approved. Here’s what you need to know:

Quick Answer: How CSLB Exam Scheduling Works

  1. Wait for approval – CSLB reviews your application (currently processing applications received around 11/10/2025)
  2. Receive your Notice to Schedule – Mailed after your application is accepted
  3. Schedule with PSI – Call 877-392-6422 or visit https://test-takers.psiexams.com/cacon
  4. Choose your date – PSI centers open Monday-Saturday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
  5. Complete within 18 months – Your eligibility expires 18 months after application acceptance

The CSLB doesn’t set specific exam dates. You pick your own appointment time at one of 20+ PSI locations across California and Oregon once you’re approved to test.

One of the most common questions I hear from contractors is “When can I schedule my exam?” The answer surprises many people. Unlike other professional exams with fixed testing windows, the CSLB system gives you flexibility to choose your own date after approval.

The catch is understanding the timeline. Your application needs to be accepted first. Then you have an 18-month window to pass both the Law and Business exam and your Trade exam. If you fail an exam, you must wait 21 calendar days before rescheduling. And if you don’t pass both exams within that 18-month period, your application becomes void and you’ll need to start over.

I’m Phil Cocciante, and during my five years working as a license application technician at the CSLB, I helped thousands of contractors navigate the exam scheduling process and understand CSLB exam dates. Since founding Contractors License Guru in 2005, I’ve continued guiding contractors through every step from application to exam day.

Understanding CSLB Exam Dates and Eligibility

When we talk about CSLB exam dates, we are really talking about your “window of opportunity.” The moment the Contractors State License Board (CSLB) accepts your application, a countdown clock starts. You don’t just get one shot at a specific time; you get a broad timeframe to prove your expertise.

The 18-Month Rule

From the date your application is officially accepted, you have exactly 18 months to pass all required examinations. This usually includes the Law and Business exam and the specific Trade exam for your classification.

If you don’t pass both within this window, your application becomes “void.” This is the contractor’s version of a “Game Over” screen—you’ll have to submit a brand-new application and pay the processing fees all over again. In extreme cases, such as a documented medical emergency, the CSLB may grant a one-time 90-day extension, but we highly recommend not counting on that!

Application Acceptance vs. Scheduling

You cannot simply pick CSLB exam dates the day you mail your check. The CSLB must first verify your four years of journey-level experience and clear your initial paperwork.

To see where you stand in the queue, you can Check current CSLB processing times. As of late 2025, the board is working through exam applications received in early November. Once they give you the green light, they will mail you a “Notice to Schedule.” This is your golden ticket to the PSI testing system.

While you wait for that letter, it is the perfect time to brush up on your knowledge. You can find More info on online practice exams on our site to ensure you’re ready the moment that window opens.

Tracking Your Application and CSLB Exam Dates

We always suggest keeping a close eye on your status. You can check your application status online using your Application Fee Number and PIN. Once your status changes to “Referred to Exam,” keep a sharp eye on your mailbox.

The Notice to Schedule will contain your eligibility period. If you pass one exam (say, Law) but fail the other (Trade), the passing result is valid for five years. However, you still have to pass that second exam within the original 18-month application window to get your license issued without starting over.

How to Schedule Your CSLB Exam with PSI

Once you have that Notice to Schedule in your hand, the ball is in your court. The CSLB doesn’t assign you a date; they’ve outsourced the actual testing to a company called PSI Exams. This is great news for you because it means more locations and more flexible times.

The Scheduling Process

You have two main ways to lock in your CSLB exam dates:

  1. Online (The Fastest Way): Visit the PSI website or the specific California portal at https://test-takers.psiexams.com/cacon. You’ll need to create an account, select “Government/State Licensing Agencies,” choose “California,” and then find the “CA Contractors State License Board.”
  2. By Phone: If you prefer talking to a human (or navigating a phone tree), you can call PSI directly.

For a detailed walkthrough, check out our guide on How to schedule your contractors exams with PSI.

Separate Scheduling for Law and Trade

If you are required to take both the Law and Business and a Trade exam, you must schedule them as separate appointments. You can often take them on the same day if the test center has back-to-back slots available, but you have to book them individually.

PSI Contact Information and Hours

PSI’s customer service is available to help with scheduling issues, though they cannot answer questions about exam content (that’s our job!).

  • Phone Number: 877-392-6422 (Select Option 2 for CSLB)
  • Phone Hours (Pacific Time):
    • Monday – Friday: 4:30 AM – 7:00 PM
    • Saturday – Sunday: 8:00 AM – 2:00 PM
  • Online Scheduling: Available 24/7

Note: If you have been approved for special accommodations or a translator, you cannot schedule online or via the standard 877 number. You will need to follow the specific instructions provided by the CSLB via email.

PSI Test Center Locations and Out-of-State Options

One of the perks of the PSI partnership is the sheer number of testing sites. You aren’t forced to drive across the state to Sacramento just to take a test.

California and Oregon Locations

There are 20 PSI test centers throughout California, including major hubs like Sacramento, San Jose, Fresno, San Bernardino, San Diego, and Norwalk. Additionally, there is a testing center in Wilsonville, Oregon, which is authorized for CSLB trade exams.

You can View all CSLB testing centers to find the one closest to your home or job site. Most centers are open Monday through Saturday, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Taking the Law and Business Exam Out of State

If you are currently living outside of California or Oregon, you might have some options. According to Business and Professions Code 7065, while Trade exams must generally be taken at specific Western region centers to ensure equipment and security standards, the Law and Business exam can often be taken at PSI “National” centers across the United States.

However, don’t just show up at a PSI center in Texas and expect to test. You must have your out-of-state location approved during the scheduling process. If you are applying for a waiver of the trade exam, this makes getting licensed from afar much easier!

Preparing for Your CSLB Exam Dates

Walking into a testing center can be nerve-wracking, but knowing the format helps calm the jitters. All CSLB exams are administered via a Computer-Assisted Testing (CAT) system. Don’t worry if you aren’t a “computer person”—the system is very simple, and there is a tutorial at the beginning of the session.

Exam Format and Duration

  • Time Limit: You are allotted 3.5 hours for each exam.
  • Question Type: Multiple-choice.
  • Language: English (unless a Spanish version is available for your specific trade or you have an approved translator).
  • Materials: PSI provides everything you need—pencils, scratch paper, and a calculator. You are not allowed to bring your own.

For more details on the “vibe” of the testing room, read our article on What to expect during your CSLB exam.

What to Bring on Your CSLB Exam Dates

The security at these centers is tighter than an airport. If you don’t have the right ID, you won’t be testing, and you’ll lose your fee.

Required Identification:
You must bring a current, government-issued photo ID that matches the name on your application exactly. Acceptable forms include:

  • State-issued Driver’s License
  • State-issued Identification Card
  • U.S. Passport or Passport Card
  • Military ID

Prohibited Items:
Basically, if it isn’t your clothes or your ID, leave it in the car. Prohibited items include:

  • Cell phones and smartwatches (the biggest culprits!)
  • Wallets and keys (lockers are usually provided, but they are unattended)
  • Notes, books, or papers
  • Food or drinks

Security Penalties

The CSLB takes exam integrity very seriously. Violating security rules—like trying to copy questions or bringing in “cheat sheets”—is a misdemeanor. Penalties include a $500 fine, potential damages up to $10,000, and being barred from getting a license for one full year. It’s just not worth it!

Rescheduling, Retakes, and Special Accommodations

Life happens. Sometimes you wake up sick, or a project has a massive emergency on your scheduled exam date.

How to Reschedule Without Losing Money

If you need to change your CSLB exam dates, you must give PSI at least two full business days (48 hours) notice. For example, if your test is on a Monday at 9:00 AM, you need to call PSI before 9:00 AM the previous Saturday.

If you fail to appear or cancel late, you will forfeit your exam fee. To get back on the schedule, you’ll have to pay a rescheduling fee (currently around $60-$100 depending on the circumstances). You can find more details here: How to reschedule your CSLB exam.

What Happens if You Fail?

First off, don’t beat yourself up. These tests are designed to be challenging. If you don’t pass, you will receive a score report immediately showing which sections you struggled with.

You must wait 21 calendar days before you can pay the re-examination fee and schedule a retake. This 21-day “cooling off” period is designed to give you time to study the areas where you were weak. You still have to pass within that original 18-month application window!

Requesting Accommodations and Translators

The CSLB complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). If you have a disability that requires special testing conditions (like extra time or a private room), you must submit Form 13E-77 (Special Accommodation Request) to the CSLB before you schedule your exam.

Translators:
If you aren’t fluent in English, you may be able to bring a translator.

  1. Spanish Speakers: The CSLB offers the Law and Business exam and about 10 major trade exams (like B-General Building or C-36 Plumbing) in Spanish. If a Spanish version exists, you cannot bring a translator.
  2. Other Languages: For other languages, you must submit a written request to the CSLB for approval. The translator must be at least 18 years old and cannot be a contractor or someone involved in the construction industry.

Expect a 4-6 week review period for accommodation or translator requests.

Frequently Asked Questions about CSLB Exam Dates

Can I take the exam in Spanish?

Yes, but only for certain classifications. The Law and Business exam and 10 of the most popular trade exams are available in Spanish. When you arrive at the PSI center, you simply select the Spanish version on the computer screen. If your trade isn’t one of the 10, you’ll need to go through the formal translator approval process mentioned above.

When will I receive my exam results?

You’ll know before you even leave the building! The computer scores your test the second you hit “Submit.”

  • If you pass: The screen will simply say “PASS.” The CSLB does not give out numerical scores to successful candidates.
  • If you fail: You will receive a percentage breakdown of how you performed in each section (e.g., “Safety: 60%, Estimating: 40%”). This is incredibly helpful for focusing your studies for the retake.

What happens if I fail the exam?

As we mentioned, there is a 21-day waiting period. You will need to pay a re-examination fee to the CSLB. Once they process that payment, they will issue a new Notice to Schedule. As long as you are within your 18-month eligibility window, you can keep trying. If that window closes, you have to start the whole application process over from Step 1.

Conclusion

Navigating CSLB exam dates and the PSI scheduling system is the final hurdle between you and your California contractor’s license. It can feel like a lot of red tape, but as long as you respect the 18-month window and the 48-hour cancellation rule, you’ll be just fine.
